History:
The precise historical origins of this great sport are not entirely clear. One suggestion is that the game started off as a pastime for guests on British cruise ships in the 1920's. What is generally accepted, however, that the meteoric rise of Padel can be traced back to Enrique Corcuera and Alfonso de Hohenlohe.
Enrique Corcuera:
It is said that Enrique Corcuera, a very keen tennis player didn't have enough room to build a tennis court next to his home, so he used what land he did have to build a 20X10M court, the court was enclosed by walls and instead of full size tennis racquets, short handled wooden bats were used to play this adapted form of tennis.
Enrique Corcuera's Original Court:
Alfonso de Hohenlohe:
In 1974 Alfonso de Hohenlohe traveled from Spain to Mexico to visit his friend Enrique Corcuera and in doing so discovered this new form of tennis. He enjoyed the game so much that on his return to Spain he introduced the concept to the illustrious Marbella club. Initially two padel courts were constructed, followed by more as the game caught on.
Manolo Santana:
Padel was soon being played and endorsed by superstars such as Spanish tennis legend Manolo Santana and before long courts began appearing across Spain as more and more people began playing this great game.
As more and more holiday makers and Expats discover Padel it's only a matter of time before this great sport takes off across the UK and Ireland. The following links are testament to this growing interest and are well worth a visit.
